Anniversary

Char and I celebrate our twelfth wedding anniversary this weekend. Because of other obligations, we’re celebrating earlier (tonight). Charlene said to me yesterday that she likes what Gary Thomas says: what if God intends marriage to make us holy, not happy? I wouldn’t say we’ve been unhappy – far from it – but marriage is no cakewalk. I can’t buy those cards that say it’s been day after day of unbridled bliss. It hasn’t been. We’re daily confronted with our differences and weaknesses. Marriage has a way of uprooting selfishness and character flaws. But I wouldn’t change it for the world (most days). Before we got married, an older couple said to us, “You have no idea what love is. You think you’re in love now – wait until you’ve been married 25 years. Then you’ll know what real love is about.” They’re right. We’re finding that out.
