# Theatre of the absurd

This afternoon, the government of Canada *could* fall. What will happen is anybody’s guess, because the ground seems to shift by the minute. A [defection](http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1116453295557%5F20?ref=dashhouse.com), attacks of [heartburn](http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1116444039340%5F9/?hub=CTVNewsAt11&ref=dashhouse.com) and [appendicitis](http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20050519.wparrish0519/BNStory/National/?ref=dashhouse.com), [alleged bribes](http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1116501888303%5F47/?hub=TopStories&ref=dashhouse.com) for those who abstain, plus the mystery of [how some independents will vote](http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1116498204818%5F4?ref=dashhouse.com) – it doesn’t get any stranger than all of this. Almost nothing could surprise me now.

It’s all a little disillusioning no matter what political party you favor. Even if you are Liberal (and things seem to be going their way), it’s hard to feel very good about the state of affairs.

I hope, whatever happens, we’ll somehow get back to a semblance of principled leadership. It could be a very strange day.
