I’m back in the work groove again. My to-do list is a mile high, and I’ve got way more to do than is reasonable. Some insights from my vacation are helping me out, though. Camping is not completely restful. It’s actually quite a bit of work. There’s one main difference between camping and everyday life. It’s not the work, but the lack of hurry. There were only a couple of times on the trip that we had to hurry to meet a deadline, and both times we felt the stress level rise. I learned something important. Work doesn’t tire me, not usually. Hurry does. I know, everyone has to hurry sometimes. The problem is that my life easily slips into hurry mode all the time. That’s why I often feel like I’m skimming, hunting fleas instead of elephants as they say. This Fall, I’m going to do some reading on finding rhythm and living sanely, with a bit more internal space. Who knows if I’ll do any better. At least I’ve identified something I need to work on.
