Two free tickets to Ordinary Radicals

| No TrackBacks

I have two free tickets to the Ordinary Radicals movie Friday night in Toronto. I thought we could make it, but when I bought the tickets I didn't realized they had changed the dates. And we have other plans tonight.

First one to contact me gets them.

Here's more about the movie from the Empire Remixed website, and from the Ordinary Radicals blog.

Director Jamie Moffett will be with us in the audience, and ready to answer your questions after the film.

Jamie compiled much of the footage from this film while touring with Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw on their Jesus for President tour, including their stop in Toronto at the end of June.

The film features interviews with: Becky Garrison, Shane Claiborne, Jim Wallis, Brian McLaren, Tony Campolo, Rob Bell, John Perkins, Brooke Sexton, Michael Heneise, St. Margret Mckenna, Logan Laituri, Zack Exley, Aaron Weiss and our very own activist theologian, Brian Walsh.

Update: They're gone!

Workshop on Biblical Exposition

Last year I attended a Workshop on Biblical Exposition put on by Simeon Trust. I compared it to the first week of my D.Min. in preaching and said:

I had a similar experience this week - almost as good in some ways, but a lot cheaper. I attended a Workshop on Biblical Exposition put on by the Charles Simeon Trust. The workshop includes instruction, small group practice, and model expositions (sample sermons that put these into practice).

Worth checking out if you ever get the chance to attend one.

Next year we're hosting one at Richview from March 25-27. It's not too soon to register. Find out more here. Well worth attending.

Westminster Chapel, Toronto

Westminster Chapel is a new church plant taking place on the Danforth. Joe Boot, former Executive Director of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries In Canada, is the pastor. I'm genuinely excited about this church plant.

Westminster Chapel is a new downtown church for the committed and the curious. We are dedicated to community life & discipleship and to a credible and coherent articulation of the biblical world and life-view. We're passionate about cultural renewal in Toronto and Canada. We believe that the good news of the Kingdom of God in Jesus Christ is relevant to every area of life and thought, holding the answers to every aspect of our human experience.

You can check out their postcard here (PDF). The launch is Sunday, September 28, at 10:30 a.m. They are hoping that as many people as possible will turn out for this event.

The Big Question

TBQ.jpgWe saw The Big Question at Windrider Toronto last night. It's a documentary that tells the stories of people who have been horribly wronged, and have had to grapple with whether or not (and how) to forgive.

Whenever I speak on forgiveness, I can tell that it's an issue for almost everyone out there. You could feel that tension last night. The director said that he tried interviews on the street, asking people what they would like to say about forgiveness. Most of the people essentially said, "You don't want to ask me about forgiveness."

The most poignant stories for me were those of the Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania who chose to forgive the gunman who slaughtered their children. They asked the director to mention that this was not easy for them, contrary to what some have said. It was also interesting to hear the story of a man who had just finished writing a book on forgiveness when his mother was killed. Although he had spent years teaching and writing about forgiveness, he felt consumed with a desire for revenge until he caught himself and turned to forgiveness instead.

1581349807.jpgSomeone asked the director if he felt we need God's help in order to forgive. The director said that he wasn't sure, but maybe it would help. The film was eclectic in its spirituality, quoting Deepak Chopra and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar as well as Desmond Tutu and Sister Helen Prejean. It's not a film that aims to present a Christian theology of forgiveness. Rather, it's a film that shows the incredible cost of forgiveness, and it portrays some who found the strength to forgive.

There's one more film at Windrider tonight: The Third Wave. If you're in the Toronto area, you really should check it out. We'll be there.

Speaking of forgiveness, I'm looking forward to reading Unpacking Forgiveness: Biblical Answers for Complex Questions and Deep Wounds by Chris Brauns. Chris is a good guy to write this needed book on such an important topic.

I'm really looking forward to these meetings:

The Toronto Pastors Fellowship exists to bring glory to God by equipping, challenging, and developing relationships among pastors in the Greater Toronto Area...

If you are serving a local church in pastoral ministry, training for ministry or just have a delight in studying the Word of God, we want you to be a part of this meeting. The schedule of speakers and topics for this year is remarkable! Every meeting will begin at 10AM and include worship in song, instruction, discussion and prayer.

The first meeting is September 22 from 10 to 12:30. Definitely worth checking out.

The Gospel Coalition has now posted more information about their 2009 Conference taking place in Chicago next April 21-23. Updates include a more complete schedule and a series of promo videos.

I'm already registered and you should come too. If you're traveling from Toronto and want to hitch a ride, just drop me a line.

My friend Bill Kinnon has let me know about The Windrider Forum at Wycliffe College. It's taking place September 9, 10 and 11 during Toronto's International Film Festival. This short video tells you a little about what you can expect:

You can watch a couple other videos and find out more information at the Windrider site. I'll be there.

Registration for the 2009 National Conference of The Gospel Coalition is now open. I've signed up. Anyone else going?

Q&A Tonight

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks

Tonight I'm the guest at a coffee house for international students at York University. Students have submitted a lot of good questions for me to answer as a pastor. Some examples:

  • Why are there so many denominations of Christianity?
  • Why did the earthquake happen in China?
  • How can we know if the Bible is true and is from God, not just fiction and superstition?
  • Is the Bible in conflict with science?

And many more.

Should be interesting. If you're the praying kind, pray for me tonight.

Theology Pub tonight

If you are in the Toronto area and enjoy discussing theology over a cold drink, then join us tonight for theology pub.

Place: Sarah’s Café and Bar, 1426 Danforth Ave. (at Monarch Park Ave., west of Coxwell) - phone 416-406-3121

Time: 7:00 until we're done

Topic: We'll be discussing An Evangelical Manifesto. What can we learn from the manifesto? Is it just about positioning evangelicalism in the public eye, or is it calling us to real change?

Hope you can make it.
