Journey to the Heart of God

I attended a seminar last Saturday at Bramalea Baptist led by Milfred Minatrea, author of Shaped by God's Heart. The topic was on becoming a missional church. Also got to meet Darrell Buchanan, a pastor and fellow blogger from Hamilton, who attended. Seems like we've been in the same room before but it's the first time we met.

I've just posted my notes from the conference:

I guess I was “conferenced out” last week after attending a sermon seminar, a missional church workshop, and then three sessions from our guest speaker from Arab World Ministries on May 28th. When I attended the missional church workshop, I... Read More

Darryl,

Thanks for the notes from the seminar. What did you find helpful?

Also I'm sure you've met and talked with your share of people who scratch their heads wondering what missional is. It claims to be a "shift," a "reformation," etc. but they find it hard to see what's so new about it. What's the difference versus say the lifestyle/incarnational evangelism kind of stuff that I think many of our FEB churches have been teaching for the last 20 years?

Wayne,

I thought Milfred did a good job speaking to people who are from a more conservative environment. He isn't emergent. His seminar was good for those in traditional churches like FEB ones.

Some of his stuff was helpful. He had a few thoughts in there that are sticking with me - the quote "If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea." Also the idea of seeing ministry at church (the building) as preparation for ministry out there the rest of the week, and his use of the Awakenings clip. Nothing new but presented in fresh ways.

I think missional is different from lifestyle/incarnational evangelism in a couple of ways:

-it's more holistic (whole life not just soul)
-it's central - not part of what we do but central, because of God's missionary heart

Of course, the cynic in me knows missional is a buzzword right now and maybe a little too trendy, but I think these guys are on to something.

Let me know if all of this makes sense.

Thanks, I appreciate hearing your perspective on it. I've been trying to grapple with some distinctives/emphases.
