A rant Mark Driscoll in response to Brian McLaren, that ends with these words::

Lastly, for the next 5-10 years you are hereby required to white 1 Peter 3:15 which says "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect" out of your Bible until further notice from McLaren because the religious right forget the gentleness and respect part and the religious left forgot the answer the question part. Subsequently, a task force will be commissioned to have a conversation about all of this at a labyrinth to be named later. Once consensus is reached a finger painting will be commissioned on the Emergent web site as the official doctrinal position.

I'm left quite speechless by Driscoll's rant, although I have wondered in the past why McLaren hasn't tackled this tough issue as readily and graciously as he has others.

Update: The post has been edited, and some comments deleted, but the original lives on here.

Wow,

That was quite the rant. I guess I can understand his frustration. Even from your site, I do understand those who want to legislate morality. I just don't know what to do anymore.

As with almost every public forum rant, the question is "what good did that do?"

I got a few things out of it...
1. Driscoll has a big church in an unchurched city (wow)
2. He's a male lesbian
3. He doesn't like McLaren
4. He thinks Pagitt is a "Tonto" (is that a racial slur?) and into beastiality.
5. He has a church of 5000 in an unchurched city (wow)
6. He uses the word "gay" as a derogatory adjective.

Not a bad rant, overall...

Eeeek.

I really have issues with Driscoll's tone, here.

I understand the passion...but I think some of the comments left at the Ur sight are right. The problem with a rant like this is you feel a whole lot better, but you haven't really accomplished a lot.

and now they have changed the article and deleted my comment in regard to Driscoll's bestiality inference.

pretty poor I reckon - the original post is on my site

Isn't Driscoll an emerger as well? Personally I think people like McLaren and much of the emerging church types need to be challenged with some of the things he is saying - even better if the challenge is coming from within.

I don't like rants either but then again isn't this common in the emerging circles?

Driscoll has common roots with other emerging leaders, but i'm not sure he would call him self emergent.

I agree with the need to be challenged, especially from within.

As for rants - I'm seeing fewer of them. Hope we're all maturing a little bit with only occasional lapses.

Yeesh it's been a while since I've lurked, and when I come back... here you are with a doozy of a post! I agree with some of the points of Driscoll's frustration, but not the sarcasm. I think the real litmus test will be if we can control our own reactions. Sometimes blogging about it is not the best place to "vent", one must be purposeful and clear and humble when talking about such sensitive subjects. You never know when you'll get smacked down by your own tongue, I know from personal experience! It just hangs out there like a huge blemish and people are only too willing to watch it burst... ick visual, sorry.

This whole emergent thing will blow over.

Driscoll is a male lesbian? And a pastor?

And we give him/her credence? Why?

Just to let y'all know, who clicked on the link and got a 404 error message - backyardmissionary has removed the original posting from his blog.

Andrew Jones has a lot of grace for Driscoll. He knows him. I don't on both counts.

Where I might find some amount of agreement with Driscoll's argument, the framing of the argument reveals an arrogant person who never wants us to forget just how big his church is. "we took a lot of heat for being among the biggest churches in the state, the largest evangelical church in our city" "As the pastor of a church of nearly 5000 in one of Americas least churched cities" Gee, at least their were four paragraphs between those statements.

Mark's ego appears to match the purported size of his church. Let's pray this megachurch,  megamouth pastor gets some mega mentoring. He needs it.
