Segways cannot be operated legally on Toronto streets or sidewalks, according to city lawyers.The legal opinion says the two-wheeled, electric-powered machines can travel on roadways in city parks, but not elsewhere in the city.
Torontoist comments, "the Ministry of Transport won't give them license plates, so you can't take them on most roads. Where does that leave a Segway driver to take his new toy out for a spin? Just about nowhere.
Interestingly, a London police officer is applying to ammend the by-law prohibiting his handicapped daughter from riding her Segway. He wants it changed to allow handicapped people to ride on the sidewalks so that she can get around. She was born with deformed limbs. Local council is very open to the idea but who knows if the provincial laws will overrule.
