Theology and Worship

I appreciate these words from Wayne Grudem in his Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine:

We Should Study Systematic Theology With Rejoicing and Praise. The study of theology is not merely a theoretical exercise of the intellect. It is a study of the living God, and of the wonders of all his works in creation and redemption. We cannot study this subject dispassionately! We must love all that God is, all that he says and all that he does.

Grudem captures it well: "Doctrine is to be felt at the emotional level as well as understood at the intellectual level."

I love Grudem's devotional feel to his Systematic Theology.
I find that reading theological works is often more edifying to me than reading scripture alone - although let me explain. I read the scripture and it's the infallible word of God. There is no arguing with the text. I read a theological work by man, and I start thinking deeply about what I agree with and disagree with. That drives me back to examine the scriptures - but this time in a different light. This practice has increased my engagement with the scriptures and has been very enjoyable.
I wouldn't advocate only reading in this way, but it's a nice supplement to a Bible reading plan.
