Would Not Stoop to Serve Their Lord

And next to them the Tekoites repaired, but their nobles would not stoop to serve their Lord. (Nehemiah 3:5)

I read this verse the other morning, and it's been haunting me. Matthew Henry writes, "They would not come under the yoke of an obligation to this service; as if the dignity and liberty of their peerage were their discharge from serving God and doing good, which are indeed the highest honour and the truest freedom."

  • Do I give myself exemptions from service for any reason?
  • Do I think I'm too good to serve God in some particular area?
  • Do I try to avoid any obligations that are rightfully due to God?
  • Am I refusing to participate in any part of God's work for reasons of pride or entitlement?
