The Idolatry of Pastoring

heartofaservantleader.jpg

Jack Miller to a pastor in conflict:

It's hard for me to escape the conclusion that you are getting your identity from pastoring, and this identity is being substituted for a personal knowledge of Christ and a love for people. You cannot even see the self-centeredness because you are on a ministry pedestal...Because of this confused self-identification it is hard for you to engage in wholehearted repentance.

...Because I love you I tell you these things. Hard as it is for you to hear these concerns, my confidence is that Christ will use this forthrightness to bring you release from bondage. There is not a single thing that I have found in you and mentioned in this letter that has not been in me...So I am asking you to join me in revival and repentance. Be a son of God with me. (p. 198)

This excerpt is far more common among vocational Christian leaders, than I want to acknowledge. But it is a necessary exhortation - thanks for posting it, Darryl.
