Just Do Something: A Liberating Approach to Finding God's Will

There are few things more paralyzing than the search for "the center of God's will." The stakes, especially when you're young, are huge. What if you pick the wrong career or spouse? But it really doesn't get any easier when you get older. I've seen older people agonize, or do some pretty silly things, to try to discern God's will.

So whenever I teach on God's will, it's not hard to get people's attention. It's a very relevant issue for all of us.

That's where a book like Just Do Something comes in. In the past, I might have used Found: God's Will by John MacArthur, or even the huge volume Decision Making and the Will of God by Garry Friesen and J. Robin Maxson. Now I'll be recommending this book.

A sample:

The will of God isn't a special direction here or a bit of secret knowledge there. God doesn't put us in a maze, turn out the lights, and tell us, "Get out and good luck."

...God gives His children the will to walk in His ways - not by revealing a series of steps cloaked in shadows, but by giving us a heart to delight in His law.

So the end of the matter is this: Live for God. Obey the Scriptures. Think of others before yourself. Be holy. Love Jesus. And as you do these things, do whatever else you like, with whomever you like wherever you like, and you'll be walking in the will of God.

There's nothing really new in this book, but it is a good resource for those who mistakenly believe they have to discover God's mysterious and secret will for their lives. It's especially geared to young adults, and deals bluntly with the topic of finding a spouse. I'll be recommending this book to people who are struggling - often unnecessarily - with trying to find God's will for their lives.

Thanks for letting me know about this book. I will definitely look into it. I haven't always appreciated the popular books on "finding God's will" so if this really is "liberating" approach (as you say), then thanks for passing it on.
