iPhone or no?

There was a time that I was sure I was going to get an iPhone whenever it came out in Canada. That all changed when I realized how much it would cost. Then I saw that Rogers was reducing their rates in response to customer feedback. I began to lean towards getting one again, until I realized their reduced rate didn't include features like Visual Voicemail, which you could get for an extra $8. Feels too much like getting nickeled and dimed.

All of a sudden I'm liking the monthly fee on my iPod Touch.

I was already starting to analyze what drives me to want things like this so strongly. I began typing this post using iPhone as a keyword. As I typed i the program suggested idolatry as a tag. If an idol is something that you long for, that you hope will give you meaning and fulfillment apart from Christ, then maybe the iPhone is too much like an idol for me. Sad when you think about what it is.

Last year I saw John Piper react to being given an iPhone. He offered thanks, and then said, "Get thee behind me, Satan!" I know what he means.

So no iPhone for me. And I'm glad actually.

C'mon Darryl, You really want to bail on the HTC Touch this fast? I thought we were in this together! :)

It's true. I almost bailed on the HTC Touch. But the iPhone is prettier!

I'm on a working vacation organizing my garage. And, I'm once again learning, "We don't own stuff. Stuff owns us." But, then, you probably would enjoy an i-phone.

Apple truly does make technology you want to have ... but if the purpose of a cell phone is really to make calls ... then the iphone is overkill (pretty, but overkill). The other thought I had ... original cell phones were like bricks ... technology got better and the phones got smaller ... now they seem to be getting bigger again.

I have a Blackberry Pearl, and I used all it's features for 3 or 4 months until I noticed the prices going up and up. I finally decided to ditch the data package in favour of using the wifi on my Touch, and I use the BB for strictly phone and texting and I'm more than happy. What bugs me is seeing my friends in the US using their iPhone for about $50 a month, unlimited. Grrr. When we can do that in Canada, I'll be "in". Until then, no thanks!

According to an article in today's Toronto Sun, an iPhone will cost approximately $4,000,00 over a 3 year period. I can think of a lot of things I would rather do with that kind of money! I do not need to keep up with the Joneses that much!

Its kind of like those who bowed down at the big Mac idol and converted from their PCs. Trish

Best computer decision I ever made, Trish!

Big Mac idol? Great. Now I'm hungry, too.
