Made to Stick

My prediction for Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die is that it will join The Tipping Point and Built to Last as a must-read for business people. The book explains why some ideas stick and some don't--and I've been on both sides of this equation. A warning though: If you read this book, you'll revamp a lot of your marketing material (as you probably should).

I started the book on Audible last night and it's as good as he says. The jacket copy says, “This is a book written for anyone who strives to craft messages that are memorable and lasting: teachers, businesspeople, journalists, ministers, and nonprofit leaders.” Just ordered a paper copy.

I used to be high on Built to Last until I realized that almost no organizations are actually built to last, they are built to die and in the church, that may be okay. I think we spend so much time trying to keep things alive for legacy reasons that we forget what we are trying to do in the first place. I wonder if the companies in Built to Last are just exceptions that just prove the rule. Things die.

I think Jim Collins himself is hesitant to apply business books to the church. I agree as far as the church. Institutional maintenance is very secondary to what really matters. The Made to Stick book is still worthwhile. As I read it I find it applies to tons of stuff like blogging, writing, and preaching.

Agreed, Collins is hesitant to equate the two and thanks for mentioning the book, I want to read it.
