Lunch with Don

Charlene and I spent lunch with Don Crawford again today. Don is lead pastor of Lambrick in Victoria. This is the second time that we've met now. The first conversation was a formative one for me. Part of wisdom is opening yourself up to quality people who are walking on a similar journey. I can learn and intuit more in a conversation with Don than I could in two weeks by myself. I have another lunch appointment next week with some pastors trying to figure out how to be more missional. Maybe Don will just have to move back to Ontario.

... back home late last night ... a good week in TO ... a number of lunches and coffees. Most of them taught me something ... one of the somethings being that the emergent/emerging conversation is taking place in so many different ways, shapes, places and people. Maybe the words missional/incarnational might be more helpful? I tried to explain emerging to a dear long time friend in her 60's and I failed, miserably. But there are traditional looking senior pastors of very established churches in conservative denominations who are wrestling deeply with what missional looks like in their setting ... does a certain Sunday AM service need to look "emerging" ??? no. Does those folks need to be equipped to incarnate a missional commitment in our world ??? yes. So I am thinking more about a hybrid understanding ( for me ) ... there are some who are trying to redeem existing situations. There are others who are plowing/paving new ground in new situations. There may be a few of us who are outside the church ( for any number of reasons ) looking back in? There are others yet ( maybe more than I realized? ) who live in both worlds. Jordon's insightful suggestion that Canada probably needs 2-3 of these conversation "loops" to cover the bases ... resonate.ca has a certain, critical role to play. Does emergent.ca? who is talking amongst that group of people? Is there something else out there, nationally? regionally? locally? and many more questions. Anyways ... just some jet-lagged thoughts on a Friday morning having been away a week. It is good ( for me ) to be back in the centre of the universe ( Toronto ) once in a while to listen to what a number of these "wanderers/wonderers" are thinking/experiencing, but Darryl? I'm not moving back to that rat race anytime soon! dc
