The professionalization of the pastoral ministry

This post is from the defunct blog "Dying Church"

Pastors are being killed by the professionalizing of the pastoral ministry. The mentality of the professional is not the mentality of the prophet. It is not the mentality of the slave of Christ. Professionalism has nothing to do with the essence and heart of the Christian ministry. (John Piper, Brothers, We Are Not Professionals)

So true. You can see more people who are discovering the non-professional revolution here.

I think the church is also being destroyed by profesionalization. "The way we do things in the business world is..." -- when elders say that, I cringe. Who cares what they do in the business world -- this is the church.

Indeed. Too much of the way we do church (e.g. Robert's Rules of Order.. bleh!) is based on the business model. Just once, I'd like to see someone point to the bible first when an issue of procedure comes up. I've been waiting a while.
