Switching
Sunday, February 6, 2005 at 8:06AM
I said I switched the other day. I lied. I'm switching. So far I'm loving it, but it is a bit of work getting everything set up. It's not hard to get set up, actually. The hard part is transferring everything over from Windows. Somebody could make a small fortune doing this - charging whatever to help people move from one platform to another. Pay me this much, and all your e-mails, calendars, and files will be moved over. My two pet peeves so far: shouldn't the same programs (e.g. Quicken for Windows and Quicken for Mac) be able to read the same file? Why do I have to go through all the grief of importing? Not fun. And why can't Entourage import pst files from Outlook? It will happen, but not soon enough for me. My other pet peeve is that some software (hello, Dreamweaver) won't allow me to upgrade to a different platform. I have Macromedia Studio MX 2004 for Windows, and I would have thought they would only charge me the upgrade price to switch to the Mac platform. Nope. If I want it, I have to pay the whole thing. This is what has kept me from making the switch earlier. I can't find a good Bible program yet. Accordance looks okay, but no NIV? I gotta tell you, though - this thing runs nice.

FWIW, I still have a PC around. For me, it's because I need to be able to test websites I'm building in PC browsers. The software thing between platforms bugs me, too. I could tell you ways to get around it and only pay the upgrade price, but if you want to be honest about it, the rules say to pay the full price. That's the hardest piece about switching, in my experience. The second hardest was moving everything out of Outlook. Why Entourage, if I may ask? Do you need it to be compatable with other systems? If not, I'd suggest using the iCal/Address Book/Apple Mail systems. The easiest way to port over addresses and calendar is through using a Palm based PDA. If everything's on the PDA and you then sync with the Mac, it will put everything in the right place. To move mail over to apple mail, you need to convert (on the PC) the outlook stuff to the mbox format. I believe there's a program called "out2mbox" that will do it. (Google is your friend.) Or, if you've heard all of this, I'll apologize for using the bandwidth. :)
Your software experience validates the reason I've always resisted making the swap.
Well I knew it would be a hassle, but boy and their toys...
Daryl, I have Accordance by Grammcord and it has the NIV. I'm sure they have it available. dd ... all switching and no posting makes darryl a dull boy ... or darryl's readers a dull bunch? i didn't like entourage much ... so ended up going with kevin's suggestion above ... apple's mail has been plenty good enough for me.
Well, the good news is that the switching is almost done. Short term pain for long term gain. I decided to go with Mail too. It's actually iCal that I find a bit limiting. Ah well. Thanks for all of the advice - it's been helpful.
congratulations on a smart decision. from darkness to light!! mail should be beefed up when tiger comes out later this year. lemme know if you're having any issues. I used to sell macs for several years and if I don't know the answers, I know people who do...
