It's not surprising that today's church is so confused with what the proper role of a pastor (elder) is...Afterall, that would require careful study of the Biblical passages having to do with the role and qualifications of a Pastor. ...Sadly today's church (and many of the Pastors who "lead" them) tend to look elsewhere for their philosophy of "ministry". One of the problems with defining the Biblical role of elder is that you can go in so many directions. Almost all of the bad models of pastoral leadership have some background in the Biblical text. I think you're right, though. That is really where we should be getting our philosophy of ministry.
