Remembrance Day
Thursday, November 11, 2004 at 11:30PM
Remembrance Day is almost over. One year I need to get to a service while we still have some of the Veterans with us. World War II has somehow become more real from my travels to the southeast of England. Every time I'm in Dover I think of the German planes that once flew overhead. This year in Canterbury I came across a picture of the town taken during the War, almost completely flattened by bombs. We remember; may it never happen again.

Actually, Darryl, this is one of the most poignant reminders of the war that I have seen recently. Thank you. This has touched me deeply. We always remember the veterans on November 11th, and rightly so. Their sacrifices and exploits have contributed so greatly to the freedoms we take so much for granted these days. But we seldom think of the civilians who also suffered so unbelievably during those dark days. Whether they be British, Polish, Dutch, Italian, French, Chinese, German, Russian, - whatever nationality they were, and let us not forget the Jews, - it behooves us to remember the atrocities and evil and pain they suffered as well. I even feel for the ordinary German and Japanese soldiers, (those who did not subscribe to the evil fanaticism of their leaders,) who were just doing what they were expected to do. Please God, may I not live long enough to see the next one.
