No Busses...

This post is from the defunct blog "Dying Church"

The church is not to be like a bus, where passengers sit quietly and let someone else do the driving, but like an anthill, where everybody is at work. Not everyone who thus ministers will be a church officer, nor will the service they render always be appreciated. But just as every bit of that fabulous complex, the human body, has a job to do, so it is with each of us who believe. --Packer JI. Experiencing God's Presents. Christianity Today, August 12, 2003

I have often said that some church members fdon't think of me as the Pastor -- they think of me as the paid professional Christian -- "Watch as I lead a holy life -- be careful and - Don't try this at home" Ugh!

Surely that's wrong. Isn't it the priest's job to come before God on our behalf? Why do I have to get involved??! (",)

All of which will drive me from the pastorate before long, unless I can come to some peace on it. This is important because I cannot work to change it (effectively) unless I fell the peace of God's guidance. NTP

I love analogy, but it always falls short of fully describing the kingdom of God. (and your left to fill in the blanks). Like the one above??? we are like ants??? and all have a job??? Its a wonderful picture on the surface, a cohesive group constantly busy carrying out a larger objective, but we are emotionally much more complex and vulnerable than ants. And as a group, human interactions will never function on a level of that simplicity. Ants were designed, preprograqmmed if you will, to work as a colony. Are we humans programmed to also work as a colony? I think we are more like cats. They arent interested in organizing themselves this way.

If only they'd sit quietly. There are so many backseat drivers!

The ant has made itself illustrious/ Thru constant industry industrious/ So what? - would you be calm and placid/ If you were full of formic acid? Ogden Nash But really, while we seem to be doing our own thing, like ants, perhaps like cats, who can be characterized by being very individualistic, I found some interesting things to ponder by comparing my Christian life to that of a dog. Yes Master Jesus - I obey. WOOF! Work that one out - cat theology? dog theology. One guy already has a show that he takes on the road. read about it here, book him for your church. http://www.gospelcom.net/unveilinglory/" rel="nofollow">http://www.gospelcom.net/unveilinglory/ The seminar notes give the details better than the website itself.

Packer gives us a good quote but what kindof bus did he ride on..... the only bus i remember was Alvin Lee's No.7 in rural tennessee. it wasn't quiet! it was the most immoral, nasty, mission field i ever stepped foot on. we might win our cities if we rode more buses. whatever you want to call it....though...i feel ya dog. can you say leadership vacuum?
