The problem with preaching
Thursday, July 17, 2003 at 4:07PM This post is from the defunct blog "Dying Church"
Backyard Missionaries says, "Preaching Sux..." He explains why, and I have to admit, it's pretty compelling. Somewhere, somehow, for most of us church has become Sunday-centered with the focus of attention being what's happening up on the platform. Rethinking preaching is definitely going to be necessary within the dying church.

This is one question with which I am wrestling -- how to structure worship in the Reformed tradition, specifically Presbyterian Church (USA) if preaching is not the central act of worship. I need to post about this on my own blog rather than hog your comments section, though! :)
God choose the foolishness of preaching to save those who might believe.
There is a big difference between preaching as it occurred in NT settings, and preaching in churches today. Preaching in the NT is always in the context of preaching the gospel & evangelism - it is never in the context of preaching to a congregation primarily of christians, many of whom have been in church for the last 20 years, & are expected to be in church meetings every sunday for the rest of their lives listening to sermons. Have a look at an article I've written on "The Problem of Preaching" at http://www.the-next-wave-ezine.info/issue93/index.cfm?id=16&ref=ARTICLES_DOING%20CHURCH_253" rel="nofollow">http://www.the-next-wave-ezine.info/issue93/index.cfm?id=16&ref=ARTICLES_DOING%20CHURCH_253 or www.edgenet.org.nz For Mike, in rethinking church worship & structure, the missional church concepts are great - have a look at www.friendofmissional.org
