Like a fish out of water
Sunday, June 22, 2003 at 3:06PM This post is from the defunct blog "Dying Church"
Rachel posts about a visit to a church service. Here's a sample of what the speaker said, followed by her reaction:"If you want to touch this world for God you must place your stake in the local church. Some people say, ahh but I worship God at the golf course. Yeah right!!!!!" "We need enlargement -- people need a facility to come to be healed, filled, love. We need to make room for God, maybe this means enlarging the carpark so more people can come. We believe that God pays his bills. God will only fill what we make room for him. When the increase comes, this will be a place where people can be healed and filled with the things of God. When was the last time you prayed the 'Prayer of Jabez'? When we are enlarged, we will see God's blessings." I didn't know any of the songs and my heart didn't feel like singing... maybe I've got too cynical, because it all sounded so hyped. I'm like a fish out of water.. I'm getting weary on this journey where I don't fit in but I want somewhere where I can. I really don't think I'm asking for much: just a few people to totally share the journey with, without all the unnecessary rubbish.I like that: "just a few people to totally share the journey with, without all the unnecessary rubbish."

Ma, we are so there. 4 of us walked out after a church service last Sunday and agreed we were done with "church", at least for a while. My heart cry now is to find others who feel the same.
like a snake sheds its skin of unwanted death, so the church needs to peel off the layers of garbage that keep people from seeing the beauty underneath. I'm sorry that you had to goto a place that people would try to prositute the Bride of Christ to the world. But be sure to be a part of the solution, be Jesus. Make his call your own.
Do you think you would feel that way if you were back at the Meeting House?
As a minister to a very institutional church in an overly business oriented denomination... I can't tell you how much my heart resonates with this post. The church should be about disciple making - not member making, building making, program making, or anything else. The most crucial part of church is the saying -- one beggar showing another beggar where to find food. Ugh... oh well.
thanks pastor craig. ; )
