Celebrating Christmas

This post is from the defunct blog "Dying Church"

Here is a perfect example of the faithless junk I was talking about over at the GP... Memorial Drive UMC here in Houston is having a 'Breakfast with Santa' for $30/family - church members can enjoy a continental breakfast, crafts, taking pictures with Santa and Rudolph, and getting to visit with Santa all conveniently in the church hall. Nice. I am just guessing here.. but Dying Churches shouldn't do that -- especially in celebration of Christmas... (for me) a 'breakfast with Santa' is right up there with 'come & go communion' ...

Hi Pen, I've been reading a book that Darryl sent me called "The Present Future" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0787965685/dashhouse-20/002-8557443-4326452) which talks a lot about how a lot of the activities related to "church" really fall under the "church as a club for members" category -- rather than the discipleship/serving one another/outreach categories. I haven't got the book on me, but he describes the mentality of keeping the paying members happy by providing a lot of entertainment/services for them very well. The example of Breakfast with Santa is an obvious example of this. What on earth does this have to do with church?

I couldn't agree more. Good thoughts Rachel.
