Quirky, unpredictable, uncontrollable, uncool, seemingly unstable, and in every way alive
Thursday, November 27, 2003 at 6:59PM This post is from the defunct blog "Dying Church"
I love this quote by "liquidthinking" in Making Sense of the Church about churches that embody the Gospel:The gospel turns lives upside down. People quit their jobs in business and volunteer with homeless people. A church where the gospel is known is quirky, unpredictable, uncontrollable, uncool, seemingly unstable, and in every way alive. People are loved and the kingdom is built.

I love that quote. That's what I want for me, for where I serve. I want to always be moving to that place where I say yes to Jesus in everything, everyday. How's that for a purpose statement. I know we're sinners, but when are we going to stop using that as an excuse and start really following Jesus. I wonder if that was a purpose statement at a church, how many people wouldn't want to be there? Making fully devoted followers says the same thing, but makes it more politically correct I think. By the way, if I plant, I would love something like that as part of the dna right off the bat. Or at least I'd like to be building that into my life so that can just flow out of it. No judgement here, but don't you just get tired of the whole complacent Christianity thing, where we've actually come to the place where it really doesn't matter whether you call yourself a Christian but don't display anything that resembles the fruit of a Christ follower? When I have those attitudes, or see them in me, I can understand why God says, I feel like vomiting when I see this. When did we stop taking seriously the things God says?
Had to use this quote on the IndyChurch site.
I like it. Anybody seen it?
I'm part of a church like that. Just don't think it's an easy ride. I wouldn't have it any other way, but at the same time it's not all spirituality and light. Underneath (and often on the surface) there are differences of opinion, insecurities, anger, hurt, pride and rebellion. Just like any other church. Don't let that put you off, but also don't think it's easy. We ALL have to die a bit.
