Generation Shift

Within the space of one generation the word boss has completely changed its meaning. No longer a positive sign of accomplishment and authority, such a term now symbolizes distance from others, an unreasonable toughness, and other not-so-attractive connotations. Instead, among the Boomer and X generations, there is a desire to lead more as a symbolic peer...Something remarkable has happened during the space of a single generation to cause this profound shift. (Jay A. Conger, "How Generational Shifts Will Transform Organizational Life," in The Organization of the Future)
