What Is an American?

Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American. (From National Review Online)
Rachel disagrees, and she makes a lot of sense. Read the comments - they're fascinating. Joshua Claybourn weighs in as well. I once heard someone say that Baptists are the embodiment of truth, and that anyone anywhere who holds to truth is a Baptist. Seems to make about the same amount (zero) sense.

Interesting adage you offer. Growing-up in a Greek Orthodox Church you don't hear things like that.
