Pets vs. In-laws

From Canada.com:
Canadians are 10 times more likely to buy their pets a Christmas gift than their in-laws -- and up to 15 times more likely in Atlantic Canada, where they either love their pets, or hate their in-laws, the most.
Not sure what this says about Canadians.
