Reality Church
Thursday, November 28, 2002 at 6:06AM
A friend and I talked about this yesterday. Most churches present their best faces to the world - "We are a dynamic, visionary, and growing church," blah blah blah. What if we tried reality churches? "We are a dysfunctional church with a history of problems and an unclear future." They could even add the line, "But we know it and we'll never pretend." Somebody should try this type of Reality Church.

... let me know where to find this church, and I'll be a part of it :)
I got a big kick out of your idea for a reality church. It's a great idea. That means nobody will ever do it. My own subject is writing about the historical Jesus. If scholars in this field wrote honestly about their work, it would go something like this: We're not really interested in the historical Jesus. We're scared to death of him. So we have invented this field with imposing terminology so that he will never be discovered. Theology is more important than history and we must never allow the latter to threaten the former. Reality only gets in the way of the ulterior motives of scholars.
